Biomedical Engineering Clinical Immersion Design Program Internship:
-
A selective summer program within the UF BME department in which six students were chosen and divided into two groups of three. Each group partnered with a physician from UF Health Shands to address a clinical problem. My team’s challenge was to detect a pulse during Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA), a condition where the heart exhibits electrical activity but is not strong enough to produce a detectable pulse, one of the first indicators physicians use to determine whether to continue cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). We developed a solution using Doppler ultrasound and software to not only detect a pulse but also quantify its strength, a development that could be revolutionary in emergency medicine.
UF In South Korea Study Abroad Internship:
-
This study abroad program included a project addressing a healthcare challenge within South Korea’s aging population, many of whom live alone due to the country’s demanding work culture, leaving them at risk for medication mismanagement. Reports indicate that some elderly individuals forget to take their medications at the correct times or take extra doses because they cannot remember if they have already taken them. Our team developed a prototype medication dispenser, Medispenser, which featured a sensor and locking mechanism to prevent overconsumption. The device also included an audible alarm and flashing light reminders, programmable to each patient’s needs, to ensure timely and accurate medication intake.
